How many plasmids can bacteria carry? A synthetic biology perspective
Published in Open Biology, 2025
Abstract
This perspective examines how many unique plasmids a bacterium can maintain, synthesizing evidence from natural and engineered multi-plasmid systems. It discusses compatible replicons, selectable markers, copy-number constraints, stability, and the opportunities that multi-plasmid systems create for synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.
